Walnut Cottage Cafe

If ever there was a real hidden treasure for food lovers and those who love getting away from it all, the Walnut Cottage Restaurant in Orewa is it! It's situated at 498 Hibiscus Highway, just before you start going up the hill at the bottom end of Orewa's beach. Only 50m from Orewa's beach, but completely hidden from the road, the restaurant is nestled in a quiet location where you can sit down and forget about the world for a while... and enjoy some really good food.

Klaus, Kerstin and Yves Zelles have owned the restaurant for the past 4 years. A chef by trade and with 30 years experience, Klaus is in charge if the kitchen and he clearly knows a thing or two about cooking, no doubt! He's a perfectionist and it always shows in the food and its presentation.

This family business is a true oasis. It's as peaceful as one can get and part of a lovely historic building where time stands still. On a cold winters day the fireplace will keep you cozy and warm. On a nice sunny day, it's a great place to sit outside and read the paper with your breakfast or lunch. Sunday morning brunch is a very popular time at Walnut Cottage Restaurant. They even put on different breakfasts for men and women! It's a great stop when you're on your way up North from Auckland or vice versa.

The beautiful, tranquil setting makes it a popular venue for smaller weddings, functions, and birthday parties. They cater for up to 70 People.

The menu is traditional, but being from Germany originally, they also have one or two nice German dishes for example Crispy Pork Belly, perfect when served with a German Weissbier.

The Walnut Cottage Burger is also worth a try! As good a burger as you've ever tasted. Gluten free products are available too.

Several light meals are available for those who don't want something big and they do a kid's menu too.

Oh, and don't forget to try their German Apple Strudel. It's worth a try, trust me!

During June, July and August the restaurant is open between 9.30 and 4pm except in the case where group bookings were made. They are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays during winter. Visit Walnut Cafe for a great experience in a very, very peaceful setting.
